Sourcing Fish Oil Softgels: Specs to Confirm Before OEM or Ready Stock

Two fish oil packs can look similar while describing different oil profiles, serving sizes or sourcing routes. Before comparing quotes, decide whether you are buying an existing finished pack or developing your own label. Then compare suppliers against the same specification.

1. Compare the oil profile, not one large number

NIH ODS notes that omega-3 formulations vary and recommends checking the types and amounts on the label. In your procurement sheet, give total fish oil, EPA, DHA and the number of softgels per serving separate fields. Ask the supplier to identify the basis of each figure. Do not infer the omega-3 composition from a total oil amount printed on the front of a pack.

2. Specify the softgel as well as its contents

Ask about shell ingredients, dimensions, fill weight and the proposed serving. Record whether flavoring is requested and what allergen information is available. If you have packaging equipment or a preferred closure, provide its constraints early. Treat a request for a particular size or sensory profile as a feasibility question until the proposed sample and specification have been reviewed.

3. Agree what quality evidence you need

Create a list of the identity, oxidation and contaminant checks you want to discuss, including methods and acceptance criteria where your importer has supplied them. Ask what is tested for the relevant batch and how it is traceable. A general factory certificate and a batch COA answer different questions. Neither a packaging badge nor a generic brochure substitutes for the documents you have agreed to request.

4. Keep stock purchasing and custom development distinct

For stock, ask for the current label, pack version, available batch and expiry information. For private label, agree the oil profile, shell, pack count and artwork scope before the sample plan. Packaging photographs can help describe a style, but the requested format must suit the selected softgel and storage requirements. Confirm whether the quoted scope includes packaging or only the product.

5. Prepare the destination review

Name the country and sales channel and ask the importer which ingredient, allergen, label and supporting-document checks are required. Review any source or sustainability language against evidence for that selection. Do not transfer an original retail brand’s claims to your own pack. Send the same destination brief to each supplier so quotations are compared on equivalent requirements.

Your inquiry brief

Destination country, sales channel, product identity, proposed serving specification, preferred format, estimated quantity, pack direction and document requests.

Write to be confirmed for information you do not yet have. Ask what must be resolved before the quotation, artwork and sample stages. MOQ and timing for the selected specification are confirmed in the project discussion.

Sources and scope
