Pet Soft Chew OEM: Species, Format and Documentation to Discuss

A pet soft chew project begins with the animal, not the packaging. A dog jar, a cat flavor request and a human supplement formula are different development briefs. Use a species-specific checklist to discuss a proposed canine product before committing to a label or sample.

1. Define the target animal and intended use

Record the species, life stage, weight range and proposed use before discussing ingredients. This guide focuses on dogs. If the same brand wants a cat range, create a separate brief and review rather than assuming the dog formula can be reused. Ask who will review suitability for the intended animal and use; a packaging concept does not answer that question.

2. Describe the whole chew

Ask for the proposed unit weight, dimensions, texture, flavor direction and complete ingredient list, including the chew base and other added ingredients. Record what will be evaluated in a sample and how feeding directions are to be established. Avoid specifying only a featured ingredient while leaving the rest of the chew undefined. Keep any suitability and palatability conclusions tied to the actual proposed product.

3. Discuss the destination product category

FDA explains US pet-food ingredient and labeling controls, including the role of state requirements. FEDIAF provides European pet-food labeling guidance alongside applicable legislation. These are distinct animal-product frameworks, not a reason to reuse a human Supplement Facts template. Ask the importer or qualified local adviser to determine the proposed product category and relevant requirements in the actual destination country.

4. Review claims and packaging together

Treat joint-support packaging as a design example rather than evidence of an agreed formula or permitted claim. Discuss the responsible business details, ingredient presentation, feeding directions, batch information and storage wording needed for the selected project. Do not copy disease-treatment statements or assume suitability for every life stage. Review the label text and the physical jar or pouch as parts of the same proposal.

5. Request documents for the specific project

Send the destination, proposed composition and requested document list. Ask about relevant batch COA and testing, traceability, ingredient information and any import documentation the buyer needs to discuss. Confirm the actual manufacturing source and applicable document scope. A supplier’s general certificate does not, by itself, establish that every dog chew or export destination is covered. Keep unresolved items visible in the brief before agreeing the next step.
